I cant believe it has taken me this long to write about my favorite Grand Teton Winter Photo Locations. Especially since it is Winter in Jackson Hole Wyoming 80 percent of the time. Unfortunately a lot of the stunning locations for photography in the Tetons is not accessible year round due to the insane amounts of snow we get every year. That being said there are still plenty of views to be captured in the White wonderland of Grand Teton National Park.
Glacier View Turnout (easy access usually)
Glacier View
First and foremost we will start with the most accessible and classic winter photo location. Glacier View Turnout in Kelly Wyoming. “Across the valley, the Teton Range rises abruptly from the valley with no foothills to obscure your view. Glaciers lie sheltered on the northeastern flanks of the highest peaks including the Middle Teton and Teton glaciers. Climate change is causing these glaciers to retreat. Smaller glaciers are retreating more rapidly than larger glaciers. Along the valley floor, conifer and cottonwood trees line the Snake River as it cuts through the sagebrush flats.”
Windy point Turnout (my Fav)
Windy Point
Windy point turnout is one of the closest to the mountains locations we can get to from November – May. If the Mountains are cloud covered which is likely to happen in Winter in Wyoming. This is my favorite spot to shoot because of the tree line breaking up the stark white snow. There’s also a higher chance of the clouds breaking and seeing the mountains for a minute during your photoshoot. “Climbing the hill from the Moose Entrance Gate the central Teton Range fills the skyline. This point has two waysides signs and provides parking for multi-use pathway users who want to avoid climbing the hill from Moose! During fall, the bull elk bugle along this stretch of road at dusk. Their shrill calls pierce the evening quiet. In the past, Lee Manges homesteaded on the east side of the road here. His cabin now serves as the Jenny Lake Ranger Station. As you visit today, imagine choosing this place to live under the majestic Teton Range”
Taggart lake trail head (easy parking and usually a beaten trail similar view to windy point but closer)
Taggart Lake Trailhead
This is the furthest you can go on the Teton Park Road in the winter time. Just down the way from Windy point. there’s a snowshoe trail you can walk on that is a hit in the winter. And convenient for us as photographers. Taggart Lake Trailhead.
Snake River Overlook (easy access)
Snake River Overlook
A little Further out there, Snake River overlook is a Beautiful location obviously overlooking the river set between some pines. “The sweep of the Snake River below the sagebrush flats and the high peaks of the Teton Range towering above enthrall all who visit. Today visitors try to capture this image forgetting that trees have grown and the exact location is not known. Below this point, rafters access the Snake River at Deadmans Bar coming downstream from Pacific Creek or continuing on to Moose.”
Moose Head Ranch
Moose Head Ranch is pretty far north, which again is my favorite angles. In the winter i just pull off the side of the road. Where the horse crossing sign is. This spot is in the area and some what of a secret. It took me forever and a lot of google earthing to find! When the sun is setting this is the best place in all of Grand Teton National park to be. It is only a short hike straight uphill to get to the coolest cliff shot. The best time of year to come here is obviously summer and early fall when all of the trees are golden.
Mormon Row (snow shoe access)
Mormon Row
Mormon Row is a classic Grand Teton Shot with the barn you’ve all seen. I love this for anyone who is very western or wants that classic western vibe in their photos. There are a lot of cool historic buildings around that are fun to look at as well. The best time to shoot here is in early fall before the leaves have dropped or mid summer when the wild flowers are out! But usually Accessible in the winter as well.
Gros Ventre Road
Gros Ventre Road
Places like the wedding tree, slide lake, steaming Kelly hot springs and much more to explore. Gros Ventre Road. “
When looking for an alternative route through the Grand Teton National Park, the Gros Ventre Road is sure to please. This out of the way byway is more often used in the summer by 4 x 4’s as it is not completely paved the whole way. However, it accesses many activities and locations that would be missed along the main highway.
The Gros Ventre Road Scenic Drive is a drive through the wonders of nature and history that should not be missed. It runs through Kelly, heading north towards the Bridger Teton National Forest and follows along the Gros Ventre River for most of the way. In fact, it is a good access route to get to such sites as the Lower Slide Lake, local campgrounds and various trailheads. In fact, it is highly popular with hikers, who use it to reach backcountry areas for adventures in the wilderness and beyond.”
